Reviews
- Edited 8 months agoEven though this is a compilation, it's up there with the best of their studio albums. In fact, I actually prefer Various Failures to either of the original 'rabbit albums' (White Light... and Love of Life). It cuts out some filler, has better alternate versions of some songs (the Gira version of 'Song For Dead Time' is essential), and it's all supplemented with a generous selection of complimentary material from as far back as the Children of God era (I love the acoustic version of 'Trust Me').
A lot of the material presented here sees Swans at their most neofolk, especially the World of Skin songs. The sequencing of tracks is great too; 'Was He Ever Alive?' and 'New Mind (acoustic)' are the perfect endings to their respective disks. I'd very much love to see this get a vinyl release, but I seriously doubt that will ever happen seeing as White Light and Love of Life were already given deluxe reissues less than 10 years ago.
If you're new to Swans, this compilation is a great place to start!
