Notes
An expansive musical landscape of electronic downtempo and chill out.
After exploring the Ambient & New Age genres last year with Windows, Bryan Carrigan is back with Below Zero his 4th album release in just over 2 years. Below Zero returns to the chill out and downtempo world with an expansive musical landscape of intoxicating beats, driving bass lines, exotic electronic soundscapes, percolating synthesizers and catchy melodies that have defined his eclectic and hybrid sound.
The 14 tracks contain almost an hour of chill out and downtempo goodness. In addition to the usual arsenal of synthesizers, samplers and drum machines this album incorporates ambient piano on most of the tracks for a cohesive quality. Bryan also plays trumpet on both Twist of Lime and Frisky Martini both of which are super laid back lounge and reminiscent of early DJ Shadow or Kruder & Dorfmeister. 6 of the down tempo tracks - Premise, Thespian, Detour, Almost There, Catalan and Carousel have a film noir and almost Gypsy-esque quality to them while the title track Below Zero and the darker Slinky are straight up electronica. Ditto is a jaunty track with some retro mid-80s new age sounds and thrown in to “cleanse the palette” so to speak from all of the mid tempos throughout the album are 3 upbeat Euro pop tracks - TGV, Runway, and New Day.
