Reviews
- Canadian born (Toronto) tenor jazz saxophonist Georgie Auld (1919-1990) had played & recorded with the very best over the years (Artie Shaw, Sarah Vaughan, Dizzie Gillespie, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, etc, etc), and wow !...can the man play some cool and sexy sax !
For this mid-50's set, he fronts a larger group resulting in an amazing studio session that boasts some top players (including high-note trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, trumpet soloist Ray Linn, trombonist Frank Rosolino, and pianist Arnold Ross). He sounds real fine on these swing-based tunes mixing together swing, bop, and cool jazz in winning fashion.
* (Georgie Auld is the guy who recorded the sax segments in Robert DiNiro's 1977 film "New York, New York" )
