Reviews
- Charles Stepney's production and arrangements make this album a bona fide eccentric masterpiece, and worlds away from any of Ramsey Lewis' previous records. Minnie Riperton's vocals are used as a sort of eerie celestial sounding instrument, the orchestral arrangements are often imaginative and unpredictable. Highlights include the title track, "Les Fleur" and "Only When I'm Dreaming", while "Eternal Journey" is a stunning closer, outright psychedelic. This 1968 stereo pressing has solid bass, good range from top to bottom, and a wide, sweeping soundstage. My copy plays nice and clean with occasional faint surface noise.
- Edited 7 months agoso so so so so so so so so so good. The best possible kind of soul jazz with orchestra and a few psyched out moments and a great summation of all good pop tunes that were in vogue. Bacharach the boss included. And the genius touch of Charles Stepney. and Ramsey's rippin piano playin. Minnie Riperton in there too. Maurice White and Cleveland Eaton! The best Ramsey LP
- If I had to pick a favorite Lewis LP, this would be my default for many reasons. I had heard this as a kid and still remember it. When I heard it as an adult I lost it. I was discovering the Rotary Connection, Minnie Ripperton, etc. It's hard to know what came first but when I heard this, it was on repeat for a month or four. It felt a little campy to me but I didn't care, it was the shit. This record was most likely how EWF got with Stepney as well.
