Simon Mahlathini Nkabinde

Profile:

Well-known for his gruff and deep voice, Simon "Mahlatini" Nkabinde was a South African "groaner" born in the Alexandra township in 1938 who rose to prominence in the 1960's at the height of the mbaqanga style's popularity.

Also known as "the Lion of Soweto", he was a very active recording artist and more so a live performer, often in conjunction with the Mahotella Queens and sometimes under a number of pseudonyms. Following interest in the sounds of Southern Africa after Paul Simon's 1986 "Graceland" album, the group were kept busy with concerts across the globe and even a 1989 collaboration with The Art Of Noise.

Brother of Zephaniah Nkabinde, Simon died on July 27, 1999 from complications resulting from diabetes.
