Les Inrockuptibles

Profile:

Les Inrockuptibles (French pronunciation: [le.zɛ̃.ʁɔ.kyp'tibl]) is a French cultural magazine. Started as a bi-monthly magazine in March 1986 (3,000 copies), it became monthly in March 1992 then weekly in 1995. The name is a play on "Les Incorruptibles", the French title of the American television series The Untouchables. Les Inrockuptibles is routinely nicknamed "Les Inrocks". Since Wednesday 2nd of June, 2021, due to financial difficulties, they returned to the monthly formula, and returned as well to their first Les Inrockuptibles incarnation; the CD's offered with magazine are numbered since this date.

It's a French music magazine that periodically issues CD compilations. In the beginning, rock music was the magazine's primary focus, though every issue included articles on other artistic domains. Currently, many other topics are tackled: cinema, books, society, etc.

The magazine tends to take a left-wing and intellectual approach to art and society, lending itself to accusations of elitism and snobbishness. Despite this, the magazine was instrumental in popularising indie rock music with bands such as the Smiths and The House of Love in France and Francophone countries. It was unofficially coupled with the radio show by Bernard Lenoir having a nearly identical name L'inrockuptible.

They produced several tribute records, including the influential I'm Your Fan to Leonard Cohen in 1991, The Smiths is dead in 1996 and Monsieur Gainsbourg revisited in 2006.

There is an Argentine edition, with the name of "Los Inrockuptibles".
