- Well I just got a copy of this, and it appears that whenever one of these 80th Anniversary LP's are repressed, they are now putting the Blue Note Classic vinyl hype sticker on instead of the 80th sticker. That aside, this is wonderful in every way.....flat, quiet vinyl, and excellent sounding!
- Seen some less than kind things about these Cadre Rouge mid-80's DMM reissues, and I have no others in my collection, but this Lonnie Smith classic sounds excellent to me, particularly the drums and organ. Melvin Sparks kills it on guitar, Morgan and Newman spar playfully throughout, and Lonnie does his thing. One great groove jam after another, loose but tight, and just right. My copy is in fantastic condition, and plays with only a speck or two of surface noise. Good stuff.
- My copy has is a very quiet pressing, with almost no clicks at all.
It plays very cleanly. The soundstage feels spead out, with some room between players. The dums are very nice, with good cymbal decay. The keyboard is very well-rendered, with a little funk in them. Lee Morgan's trumpet comes out of the left speaker, and it is excellent and seems to be right there at the speaker.
Pretty much everything is well-captured. This is a very well-recorded album.
Cartridge: AT VMN40ML - Did anyone notice subsonic rumble on this release? Quite weird for completely flat record to have inaudible yet visible ultra low bass which is probably a part of a master or created during laquer cutting.
- Another cracker from Blue Note. Not their traditional hard bop fare, with a mix of styles, from a South American Carnival flavour to early funk. Dr. Lonnie tears up the Hammond and Lee Morgan shredding the horn. This is a must have. And still available for cheap.
- Dynamic with a nice wide sound stage. The sound is full, rich and very warm. I got mine from Amazon. BN did a fantastic job on this one!
- Edited 3 years agoSuperb reissue of this classics on the Blue Note 80 Vinyl Reissue Series
Excellent pressing and sound, highly recommend
Purchased new 15 € on Amazon - funny but mine came with a poly lined inner sleeve as it should be. Maybe they changed that? Anyway, a great record, these 80 anniversary are a lot of record for the money, recommended, great stuff.
- This is such a great recording and pressing. I'd bet that you won't find a better pressing anywhere near this price range.
- Really blown away by how good this record sounds, it's as good as any Tone Poet or Music Matters release. Especially the drums and organs sound very lifelike. Only downside is the terrible paper inner sleeve, but that is easily replaced.
