Rod Modell isn't one to rest on his laurels, and this 12" is proof. Just when you might think his material might start sounding predictable he pushes the envelope in another direction, and usually at first I raise an eyebrow of concern... then I listen again and realize this man is once again ahead of his time. Presenting "Hash-Bar Remnants Pt1." Though its name & release date may suggest an extention of the Hash-Bar Loops album, it actually stands quite apart from it in style; less soft noise & ambience and more of a harshness and punch. Side A (my favorite cut) sounds like a slow churning engine or muted washing machine, while Side B has stabby, thrusting percussion with waving sci-fi synths swirling about. Is this the most important release Modell has done in the past year or so? No... but it still shouldn't be overlooked, especially for the collector.
