A diverse, deeply funky session from February 1968, with notable contributions from George Benson on guitar and Herbert Morgan on tenor sax. Highlights include "The Infant", the title track, and "The Hereafter", a moody, brooding masterpiece. This is a Rainbo/Scorpio release, and I'm not an audiophile, but it sounds perfectly fine to me, certainly worth the $15 I paid. There's ample low end, percussion is crisp, organ, guitar and horns are all warm and full, but the one thing I do notice is the soundstage isn't as wide, clear, and pure sounding as that on many of the recent Classic VInyl Series reissues that Kevin Gray has done. My copy plays nice and clean, with no noticeable surface noise.

Beautiful press; no surprise there. This album is generally upbeat soul-jazz, but side A closer, Hereafter, is dark-bop played with daring spirit and accuracy -- a real gem with a cooking George Benson solo.
