After SOOOOO MANY years of dues paying, "The Spinners" ("Billy Henderson", "Henry Fambrough", "Pervis Jackson", "Bobbie Smith" and the BEST puzzle piece that was MISSING in "Philippé "Soul" Wynne") FINALLY found success with their "Debut" "Atlantic Records" album....Thanks to "Thom Bell" and "THOSE Thom Bell Productions", the group scored HIT after HIT, in the forms of "I'll Be Around", "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love", "One Of A Kind (Love Affair)" , plus having an album FULL of TERRIFIC Songs to support those HITS....
So now, with both "The Spinners" and "Thom Bell" knowing what to get out of each other, they ALL came back together to release the groups 2nd "Atlantic" album in the form of "Mighty Love".....
OMG!!!!!!
Now, honestly, when a group comes out with a stunning first album, the second usually goes down a bit....
THAT WAS NOT THE CASE HERE AT ALL!!!!!!!!
This Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate Crown Jewel of an album just improved on the "Debut Album"...In fact, in some Peoples eyes (even though the 1st album had the BIGGER HITS), this album (In a WHOLE) was much BETTER!!!! (My Mom was one of those People, She KILLED this album!!!!)
The album starts off unusual though, with the VERY subtle "Since I Been Gone"....BOY!!!!!, this "Isaac D. Body Sway" joint is a Musical Phenomenon!!!! The opening Keyboards with the Strings just SUMMONS in a straight MASTERFUL song about questioning your Lover about what they been up to...."Bobbie" LAYS this joint OUT!!!!!, with the combination of the "Spinner", "Carla Benson", "Yvette Benton" and "Linda Creed" Background....
"Ain't No Price On Happiness" is also Musically FANTASTIC!!!!! The Keyboard, Drum, Bass Intro, then it goes into a straight Groove, WOW!!!!! This one also benefits from the "Henry" and "Philippe'' teamed up, with the NOW Classic "Spinner, "Benson", Benton" & Creed" Background...
The beginning of "I'm Glad You Walked Into My Life" kind of sounds like "Earth, Wind & Fire's" version of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone"...I don't know Guys (Wired Differently)....This nice smooth joint again has that "Henry", "Philippe'' Interplay Vocals....What made this one SPECIAL, was it has I believe only "Henry" and "Bobbie" giving the Background support....MAN!!!!, "Thom Bell" was just a straight up GENIUS!!!!!!
"I'm Coming Home" rounds out the 1st side NICELY...."Phillppe'" was giving the total reigns on this Up Tempo Banger ....His delivery about a "CAT" tired of the "City", even dealing with a "Place Full Of Rats", PRICELESS!!!!!!
"He'll Never Love You Like I Do" starts the 2nd side off subtle as well...This time we have the Point Guard "Bobbie" starting things up for ""Philippé" to finish it off....
"Love Has Gone Away" is another enjoyable fast Banger...."Thom Bell" has just about everyone on Lead here....It starts with "Bobbie" passing it off to "Henry", then "Pervis" only to have "Philippé" (as usual) to take it on home....
"Love Don't Love Nobody" though....
Let' me take a breath...
Ok, this BOMB right here was just IT!!!!!! I said on the last album that I felt like "Thom" was learning what to do with "Philippé's" Vocals...He found the PERFECT vehicle HERE!!!! There was no way that anyone but "Philippé" could handle this one!!!!! Even when he goes into his "Rap" toward the end, it is was just OVER!!!!!!
Now, the ONE and ONLY "Title Joint"
Honestly, I think I'm about to get MORE Personal than I have EVER been here..."Mighty Love" was MORE than just a Song, to me it's about LIFE!!!!! This AWESOME joint just sends SHIVERS down my SPINE....Between the Music and how "Philippé" just DOMINATES this joint, I just don't know what to say....Out of ALL the Songs that My Mother LOVED, I believe She LOVED this ONE the MOST!!!!! She used to ask me to put the Needle back on the song, and when I had it on CD, She asked me to put it on REPEAT!!!!! I have come to the point now that EVERY TIME I listen to it I try my BEST NOT TO CRY!!!!!! In fact, I'm trying not to do it NOW!!! I'm FAILING!!!! My Wife even bought me a shirt with the 45 Motif of the Single....I WEAR IT WITH PRIDE!!!!!!
Sorry Guys, I LOST IT a BIT!!!!!!
Well, this one was in the Books....This just continued to RAISE the stock of "The Spinners"....Now they were BEYOND STARS!!!! If you had a show, you wanted "The Spinners"!!!!!! And I'm not just talking about "Soul Train" and "American Bandstand", EVERY SHOW wanted them!!!!!!
A part of me thinks that, by now "Motown" was kicking themselves....But then again, maybe they SERIOUSLY didn't know what to do with "The Spinners"....Well, thank God "Thom Bell" DID!!!!! Because of that, we get to continue to ENJOY this TIMELESS CLASSIC of an ALBUM!!!!!!!
PS: I do have a gripe though....In 1995, "Rhino Records" released a "Atlantic & ATCO Remasters Series" of "Mighty Love"... It had some extra shelved tracks from when the group just got with the label....They Include: "I Just Gotta Make It Happen", "Mr. Big Man", "You Sure Are Nasty" and the NOW Classic, "(Oh Lord) I Wish I Could Sleep" that was on the "A One Of A Kind Love Affair (CD Anthology)" ,,,Come, ON "Rhino Records"!!!!!! PUT THOSE JOINTS ON VINYL!!!!!!!!
PSS: 5/7/2024: Thank you "bargainvinyl1" for the correct info on the Background Vocals on "Mighty Love"....... - The great sounds of the Spinners. I really love. "love, don't love nobody."The smooth voices and harmony makes this one of my favorite album.
- New to this, bought on a whim and it's instantly likeable. I wish there were more reviews on all these fine-ass records!
