Reviews
- Absolutely banging album from two trance stalwarts. When this was released in 2012 it singlehandedly reinvograted the ailing trance scene. At the time, many fans of mid-00s trance felt that the proglifting sound, that was making its way towards big-room house sounds, was alienating the fanbase and there was a lot of negative sentiment on trance forums (such as trance.nu, trancefix, etc). Solarstone had his ear to the ground and had been working on this "pure trance" sound that flirted with incorporating two decades of trance motifs into modern production techniques. Recruiting the dark horse of trance, the colossal Orkidea, the two of them turned out what is arguably one of the finest trance mixes of the decade, and one of my favourite sets of all time. It's fresh, energetic, fun and thumping, ang set the precedent for a phenomenal mix series in trance lore (although I am not sure any were ever able to live up to the original).
Disc 1: Solarstone
Solarstone took his pure sound -- where "pure" takes trance back to the genesis of trance, the old KLF "pure" trance mixes -- and brings a lot of the melodicness that got usurped by swirling sawtooth synths of dutch bigroom back into the osund. Starting with his hypnotic track "The Spell", this mix goes from strength to strength, a lovely mix of vocal trance, melodic uplifting, and driving mid-tempo progressive. Some fantastic showings by Temple One, K&A, Omnia, the in-form C-Systems, ARDI and of course the big man himself, this mix is one of the rare mixes without a singel filler track, artfully crafted and a delight to listen to. 5/5
Disc 2: Orkidea
Orkidea is one of my favourite DJs, and holy shit does he deliver. In classic Orkidea fashion its progressive, sexy, unpredictable and fresh, with a superb mix of old and new, and new updates of old, with that wonderful brooding Finnish trance sound the country produces so well. This is a mostly Finnish affair, with massive tracks from Allende, Winkee, Lowland, Michael Cassette and of course Orkidea himself, starting with the iconic unity and ending with a superb breaks remix of the same track. One of Orkidea's finest sets, and probably impossible for another Pure Trance guest mixer to top, this mix is iconic. 5/5
Top tracks:
Lemon – We Can't Fly (Solarstone Pure Mix)
C-Systems & Bushi – Ari (Suncatcher Exclusive Remix)
Orkidea – Sun Down (Michael Cassette Remix)
Orkidea – Unity (Solarstone's Metabreaks Remix)
Way Out West – Secret (Allende Remix) - I fully agree with Nihilisten!
Just want to add a detail from my side about Track 2-7 (Slusnik Luna- Valssi (Orkidea Mix) which really annoys me. Can't stand this track with the piano in the background and repetitive "whatever" and it destroys the flow of Orkideas mix - but i guess this is quite subjective ^^
However, this series is brilliant and one of the when not the best series at the moment! - Pure Trance is the best trance compilation of the past 2-3 years. No Armada fluff vocal trance, housy Arty farty or proglifting stuff. Just pure trance from downtempo, chilled to banging uplifting trance. I did not expect Solarstone to re-invent the genre of mix compilations like this. What a great job he did!
This is an essential mix compilation for the avid trance fan. Buy it.
