When listening to this record, only one word comes to mind - summer. That's right, Up builds a head of steam from filtered bass and chrome-bursting chords, resulting in strikingly luminescent melody work, which tends to build and ebb to infinity, breaking out into all sorts of ecstatic euphoria. The lead melody's arpeggio has every single ingredient necessary to forge an irresistible crowd-pleaser: impeccable flow, tight warehouse style beats and seductive synth sweeps that will be stamping smiles on peoples faces throughout the season. Stunning piece!
Moving On to Acid Bath. The title should be pretty self explanatory. This is a straight, back to basics, 303 ridden weapon designed for the peak hours. The somewhat bleepy aesthetic of the track makes it, in a way, a great homage to the rave age tunes of the early nineties, but it's the beefy percussion coupled with the heavy bass injection that will get this techno backbone straight onto the modern band wagon.
Splash takes things even further, dressed in its kick heavy sound taking on the club's prime time affair with even more self assurance than the previous cut. This jacking ripper relies on bouncing beats and a heavy dose of funk, topped off with a filtered, buzzing loop that starts out as a low murmur, gradually making its way up until its fully incorporated into the mix. Despite an obvious retro charm, Splash firmly rubs shoulders with some of the finest dance floor fillers around at the moment. For the sake of analogy, I guess you could say this one would sit nicely with some of Ben Sims' Theory & co. stable... What a way to finish off this slamming three tracker. Uplifting, commanding and uncompromisingly positive. Sure winner for full tilt groove addicts.
With this piece of wax, Benjamin Damage has ventured even more into techno territory, recording the most straight-up example of the genre he's come up with to date. The UK bass roots that usually stuck to his name are barely noticeable, yet I do not find this 12" lacking. He turned those in for some vintage TB-303 action, stronger emphasis on meeting current dance floor demands, juicy melody work, and drum programming varying from dubbed out trippyness to proper jacking action. The result? Three outstanding, banging club tracks, each great in their own right, yet they all serve one common purpose - move the crowd. With each new record, Benjamin Damage is eager to show that he's here for the long haul and that he really does mean business. In my opinion, this EP is the best proof of that yet. It very well may be a total departure from his past sound palette, but if this is an indication of things to come in the future, I for one won't be crying. On this record, he clearly boasts a fine knowledge of refined production techniques, while his trackwriting, creative and creative skills have improved immensely, and from what I have read, he's also gotten his mitts around some new recording studio equipment. By deciding to dive way back, seek out and put to use classic elements of electronic music from twenty years ago, and then fuse them with state of the present compositional tricks, he successfully pieced together an all encompassing, three dimensional release that could draw both casual large festival techno listeners as well as scene veterans, on the hunt for an optimistic, exalting take on techno music. Don't get surprised if you hear this canned all over through the entire summer, along with Head High's "Megatrap" 2xLP released on Power House not so long ago. "Up / Acid Bath" is a little treasure box of delightful sonic experiences and an explosive expression of endless musical joy!
