Reviews
- This album is seriously fun, it’s steeped in the pop neo psychedelic sound that came out in the mid 1980’s, challenging the gloom and doom rock of groups like The Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division ... the music layered and textured, bright as any ray of sun, something that the world needed when “Some Friendly” was released. But I'm making this album sound weak, and it’s not, it's a very strong record with well defined boundaries and thoughtful lyrics.
To fuel the return of the mind altering substance LSD, and E, The Charlatans have brought back the Hammond B Organ [as if it could ever go away] and applied it's abilities in subtle ways, in ways it was never used during the 1960’s. The guitars a crisp and clean, swirling and majestic, echoing in your ears long after the sustained notes have vanished into the ether. The vocals are mixed low, but that works here, lending an air of mystery to things we often miss because they are right there in front of our faces ... the Charlatans want to draw you in as much as you want to be drawn in.
The best part is that the album is not locked into a time frame, it's as fresh today as when it smacked me up side the head.
