- One of the finest examples of progressive folk if you'll let me use such a genre term ?
I d heard lots about this album over the years but it took me until 2005 to actually get a copy and really sit down for some intense listening.
Maybe better on headphones, maybe ?!? To say it's basically one man and a dog playing guitar folky music it'll blow your mind. There is Jimmy Page playing some very intricate finger picking phrases, in a couple of tracks I think, when he was at his 1970 peak. So it's not really one man and his dog really, two men?!? The main aspect that struck me was Roy's amazing vocals, almost choral in their overdubbed stacked presentation. Unlike any other folk album I've owned, the use of echo on the voice is also worth the headphone use, truly inspired by Alan Parsons, as lead engineer here.
You can see why Roy was such an influence as well as good buddy's with two of the 70s top rock bands, namely Floyd and Zeppelin, singing Have A Cigar with the former and having a song written about by the latter, Hats Off to ...... I'm sure you know.
Yes this is that "Roy" !!!
So either pick.up a nice copy of this first pressing or if you can't get one, the recent reissue is pretty fine.
Just listen to it, it changed my thinking on British " folk" music.
Then try Lifemask for the side long suite, I told you it's progressive folk. - The best review I can offer of this disc is that I’m truly embarrassed it was not in my collection until 2019. Play it at the right time, it’s not for a day of brilliant sunshine and pleasant weather. On this album Harper successfully presents music of a distinct vision. It reminds me of “The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter” having a first cousin who is easier to like, more fun to hang out with, yet still idiosyncratic and challenging.
- I've a copy of this album with different labels : A side with EMI logo , B side without the EMI logo.
Matrices are the one of the first issue SHVL 789 A/B 4U.
Can someone give some suggestion about this freak ? - Progressive Folk, complex masterpiece featuring Jimmy Page.Major influence on Baroque,Folk,Alternative artists.
