In addition to dirklancer's reference to Brian Wilson talk about the album, session tapes have him specifically saying, and I quote, "It was cut in '59." So...maybe that's where that number comes from?

For what it's worth, Magnetic South *always* sounded bad. I think it was either not enough money or experience on Nesmith's part to make a good, bright sounding recording at the time.
