American five-string banjo player, born July 2, 1936 near Reidsville, North Carolina and died November 21, 2009 in Nashville, Tennessee of leukemia.
Inducted into the IBMA Hall of Fame in 2018 and also the Bluegrass Music Hall Of Fame in 2018. Had a distinctive style of playing the banjo using pedal-steel guitar licks. Noted for player with Jim Eanes and the Shenandoah Valley Boys, 1952, 1956-1960; Mac Wiseman and the Country Boys, 1953; Hack Johnson and the Tennesseans, 1954-1955; The Farm Hands, 1955-1956; Jim and Jesse and the Virginia Boys, 1960-1966, 1983-1988; Luke Thompson and the Green Valley Boys, 1968-1969 and the Dixie Revelers, 1969-1970
