Young Flowers

Profile:

Young Flowers were a Danish psychedelic / progressive rock trio, formed in Copenhagen in the summer of 1967 by Jens Dahl (ex-The Defenders (6)) (lead guitar), Peter Ingemann (ex-Peter Belli & Seven Sounds) (bass, vocals) and Ken Gudman (ex-The Defenders (6)) (drums). They started rehearsing some ten self-penned songs in August 1967 at Peter Ingemann's father's farm in Ordrup, Gentofte Kommmune (Municipality) in what today is a Copenhagen suburb. 10 September 1967, they made their first public performance as guest artist for Traffic at the Falkoner Centre (Falkoner Centret) in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen. The reviews were rave, and the only complaint was that they had played too loud.

The band debuted the same year on Sonet with the single Like Birds b/w City of Friends. After the release of the single, Jens Dahl left the band due to health issues, and was replaced by Peer Frost (ex-Les Rivals) on lead guitar. With this constellation, the band achieved great popularity in Denmark, especially via the television series Blomsterpistolen (The Flower Pistol), where the band drew attention by using Danish lyrics in their progressive rock.

The band was originally inspired by bands like The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream (2), but gradually shifted toward more blues inspired and experimental material. The band used a lot of guest artists on their records as well as on stage; including Bent Hesselmann (saxophone), Lasse Lunderskov (lead guitar), Lars Bisgaard (vocals), Peter Thorup (lead guitar, vocals) and Niels Skousen (vocals).

In 1968 they wrote the music for the short film Cæcilie, and in 1970 they appeared in and wrote a song, Party Beat, for the Danish movie Stille dage i Clichy (Quiet Days in Clichy). In the spring of 1969 the band had toured Canada and the US as the first ever Danish rock band, but the loose structure of the band eventually led to its disbandment in the spring of 1970.

In 2015, they reunited with Søren Berlev on drums, and released an album. They still played the odd concert at summer festivals when the COVID-19 pandemic put an end to further gigs in 2020.
