- 'Untitled' has been considered by some of the true experts as the "1st Techno piece in history". It's true that the straight 4/4 beats and the ethereal atmospheres give it a proper Detroit Techno feeling. Even though, Juan said to me once in a phone interview that he doesn't "differentiate the Techno and Electro he did", which means to him, 'Alleys Of Your Mind' is the 1st Techno single. Many consider the 1st Metroplex (No UFOs by Model 500) the starting point as well. Whatever you may think, 'Untitled' is arguably a landmark in Detroit Techno history. Proper future dancefloor music.
- A classic piece of Detroit techno history, no doubt. But in light of the allegations made against May this is very hard to listen to nowadays. I mean ‘Let’s Go - You Ho’ 😬 I’ll probably skip on playing this out - there’s so much other great music about waiting to get heard.
- I have been buying lots of 80's house, electro and techno records these last few years (it has become quite the side project within my collection). I have been seeking the origins of all the music we love, what tracks were pivotal, who was influential and what great records have become lost to time.
Sharivari, Techno City, No UFO's, Alleys of you Mind always get mentioned as the beginning tracks of it all. I tend to agree what significant influence they all had on the creation of the House sound, the Detroit sound, Electro or Techno.
I sincerely feel this record was the true birth of Detroit Techno. This one just sounds like it's not trying to be a variation of Chicago House records, this one was 'something new' to release to the world. While many of this generation may not consider this as 'Detroit Techno', this is it's birth certificate and a statement that a new style and genre was born. - Just for the balance I will disagree, that "Let's go" sounds dated or little inventive. I discovered the track only 5 years ago and since that time it's the destillation of a certain vibe I'm looking for in electronic music. However this sound is more 'housey'. So it might not match expectations on the sound of Atkins and May. However it sounds close to what I love Saunderson's tracks for and honestly he always was more a brilliant house producer to me than "one of the three inventors of the techno sound of Detroit". I simply love listening to the track. 5/5
