Released in 1999, "Brainfreeze" was the first in a trilogy of turntablist mixes by DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist using arguably the most difficult format for turntablism: the 7", 45 rpm vinyl record.
It's a groundbreaking mix for many reasons. Firstly, the song selection is impeccable, shining a light on many little-known alternative gems from funk and soul's yesteryear, as well as some of Shadow and Chemist's own productions. Secondly, the set construction is imaginative and creative, particularly the second half of the second set, where Shadow's "Number Song" and "Organ Donor" are cleverly intertwined with their remixes and original samples. Thirdly, the turntablism is skillful and adventurous, pushing the boundaries of what is capable in a live DJ set by using two world-class turntablists - a live DJ mix with the complexity of a studio mix. Fourthly, it uses a quick-mix format to keep the energy up, squeezing 67 tracks into 52 minutes (at a time when DJs tended to play records for most of their runtimes). And finally, the mix has a distinctively exuberant and irreverent spirit, with it's cheesy radio spots and wacky turntable trickery.
Some of these strengths also lead to weaknesses: the 'comedy' "Thunderkick" introduction soon gets old, and the turntablism is sometimes too showy and detracts from the music, rather than complementing it (e.g., on "Itch & Scratch", "Soul Travellin'" and "California Soul").
However, "Brainfreeze" laid down an innovative template that went on to influence many dance mixes and albums in the 21st centrury: Shadow & Chemist's more ambitious and sophisticated "Product Placement" and "The Hard Sell" follow-ups, Mr Thing's "Things-First", "Holy Shit" and "Strange Breaks & Mr Thing" series, RJD2's "Your Face Or Your Kneecaps", Fake Blood's "USED" series, and The Avalanches' "Since I Left You", to name a few. ★★★★★ referencing Brainfreeze (CD, Mixed, Reissue) none
$75 for a reissue is insane

I just received it from Bandcamp. A bit disappointed to have pay 75$ for a reissue, whereas "product placement" seems to be the original disc. Still, I will finally be able to enjoy the mix other than the crappy MP3 from back in the days.
