D.J.Q.* – We Are One E.P.

Filter was an interesting label, home to a few other bits from DJ Q (faves: https://www.discogs.com/DJ-Q-7494-EP/release/18513 https://www.discogs.com/DJ-Q-Delirious/master/31810 https://www.discogs.com/DJ-Q-Optimum-Thinking/release/13412 https://www.discogs.com/DJ-Q-San-Frandisco-My-Kinda-House/master/313842 ), with this being an unforgettable 12" on all fronts, especially account of the oddness & originality of 'We Are One'. You just didn't hear a Scottish voice in house music, and still don't, and it bought something earthy, honest & somehow other worldly to an already stellar production. As deep & industrial as Detroit, as funky as Chicago but 100% unlike either- it's no wonder Carl Craig scrambled to remix it. Paul Flynn knew how to work a sample, & in this case, create something worth significantly more than the sum of its parts. 'She'll Be Gone' & 'Space Dance' are both top notch cuts, moody, sublime & powerful. Hall of fame material & of late, cruelly overlooked...

For me, "She'll be gone" is one of the best and most emotive UK techno tracks of all time. Lovely detroitian strings (so UR / Red Planet) with sheffield beeps over a looped rough house drum track, and don't forget the other worldly synth solo (shades of Carl Craig). Doesn't get better than this.

The Main looped Sample on A1 "We are one" was ripped from the classic Instant Funk Instrumental Track "World of Sports" on Salsoul Records 1978.
