- This should have been a domestic No. 1 hit! However it stalled at No. 2. Here is the story.
Early 1966, British band The Overlanders recorded a cover version of "Michelle", which of course was originally recorded by The Beatles for their Rubber Soul album. Due to the success of the Overlanders' version, the Dutch division of Parlophone decided to release the original Beatles version as a single, paired with "Girl", also from the Rubber Soul album. This was done without the Beatles' consent, as the band considered Rubber Soul as an album without any hit singles.
Unlike other national charts, the Dutch chart was based on sales per composition, not per release. This means that sales of both versions of "Michelle" were combined. The combined sales of "Michelle" were higher than those of GE's "That day", although "That day" is said to have sold more copies than either version of "Michelle".
However, the Golden Earring(s) had their revenge on September 7th, 1968 when they scored their first of in total five domestic No. 1s with "Dong Dong Diki-Digi Dong".
