Various - Acapella Anonymous Vol. #1 - 07-Jul-07 03:26 PM
There must be upwards of 500 dance tracks that owe their existence to this legendary bootleg. The Loleatta Holloway vocal for "Love Sensation" alone has been sampled innumerable times, most famously by Black Box for the monster hit "Ride on Time". This album is also where Snap found the "I've Got The Power" hookline. For early-90s italo house fans, this album is a gold mine of vocal samples. Hearing them unencumbered by beats can be spine-tingling, particularly when you realise that the original singers went uncredited and unpaid on so many dance hits. This album (or parts of it) was re-bootlegged countless times, and is still used today by producers looking for the happy disco vibe of the euro-house scene of 1988-1993. If it had never been pressed, the history of dance music would probably have been quite different.

Various - Shimmies In Super 8 - 17-Jun-07 01:53 AM
I remember being very excited when I received this via mail order. I was a massive fan of Huggy Bear, and I'd also seen Stereolab play a couple of times. The music isn't really that great, but the packaging is lovely. The best bit for me was finding years later just who Darlin' were. I'd bought the first Daft Punk album and was somewhat surprised to see the yellow Darlin' sticker on the gatefold photo. It also made this Duophonic double pack even more collectable! The transformation from indie-shoegazers to filter-discoers is huge and was definitely a good move by the Frenchmen.

Dubstar (2) - Stars - The Mixes - 15-Jun-07 01:48 AM
This is such a great song that it's almost impossible to ruin by remixing it. The timeless melody appears in all versions, with the WOW remix probably being my favourite here. The ravey synth chords sound a bit cheesy in 2007, but there is a pleasantly tinkling piano break. Although there was always a darker side to Dubstar (witness the sleeve designs), it was not until Sarah Blackwood formed Client that she sang about such things. Steve Hillier was the main lyricist for Dubstar, and his ear for pop hooks is clear on this release, which really should have been a huge hit. All the Dubstar singles (and indeed albums) are in some way lost classics. They are well worth picking up if you spot them in a bargain bin.

Heavens To Betsy (2) / Bratmobile - My Secret / Cool Schmool - 11-Jun-07 11:34 PM
An absolutely vital part of the history of Riot Grrrl. The Heavens to Betsy track is as good as anything Corin Tucker went on to do with Sleater-Kinney. The Bratmobile song is a brilliantly lo-fi rant about trying to be cool by namedropping indie bands. The catalogue number is the icing on the cake for me. Fantastic!
