Ben (14) - Engel

Very cool Dub on track 5. Tracks 1-3 are just typical pop from Ben but the last 2 tracks good especially track 5. It seems like a pop version of The Orb stuff in the early '90s. Good chill out Dub.
DAF* - Brothers

The side A mix by Gabi Delgado is different than the version on the Europe (DAF* - Brothers) or Canada (DAF* - Brothers) release even though it is also mixed By Gabi. The mix on this release has more echo effects and a slightly different percussion sample at the... See full review

Great B side Dub version. Interesting use of a slowed down acid loop. I guess acid house did get to Jamaica after all.

Another great Dancehall Dub. Love the reverb on this record especially the B side. It does sound a lot like Sardine's Bad Man (Sardine - Bad Man) since they're both produced by Teddy Patterson & Kenneth Hendricks.

The B side is a great Dub version. The A side is pretty good but I prefer instrumentals. Some great reverb on the Dub version. Too bad there isn't a longer version somewhere.

The vocal samples in 'Hollywood Boulevard' are of Peter O'Toole in the 1982 film "My Favorite Year" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084370/)
Schilling* - The Different Story (World Of Lust And Crime) (Long Version)
posted a comment on Schilling* - The Different Story (World Of Lust And Crime) (Long Version). over 7 years ago
Great track for its time. Basically Hubert KaH with Peter Schilling on the vocals instead of Hubert Kemmler. Definitely better than most Hubert KaH songs. Radically different than Major Tom (Peter Schilling - Major Tom (Völlig Losgelöst)).
Madonna - Where's The Party / Spotlight
posted a comment on Madonna - Where's The Party / Spotlight. over 7 years ago
Madonna's best early song for sure. I'm surprised she never released it as a regular 12" when it came it out -- just a 7" release I believe -- Madonna - Where's The Party.

Seems like user rangda states there is a skip on B1. On my copy in order to not get skips on... See full review

Both B side tracks are amazing especially Q. Q definitely has a similar sound to some of the other early '90s techno that came out in Germany & Belgum.
The Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode (DJ Exclusive Dub Plate Pack 2)

Some great Acid Dubs -- even the only vocal track (1 A3) is mostly an acid dub it has like 45 seconds of vocals. Richie Hawtin's mix is probably the only really different mix vs. the regular 12" and its pretty good as well.

I don't understand why... See full review
Rednex - Cotton Eye Joe

What a terrible song. The music is pretty good -- which is the only redeeming part of this EP. Why would a Swedish band want to make a Eurohouse track with a stereotypical Southern US dance? Who knows why clubgoers would want to listen to the annoying lyrics? See full review
Pet Shop Boys - One More Chance

What a bizarre circumstance-- Fancy (aka Tess) remixing a Pet Shop Boys song? It works since Fancy really was mainly a Euro-Disco artist with a pop flair (schlager) of course.
Project One (6) - Look Out

Great early track from the Moskwa TV crew -- Alex Henninger, RaHen & Talla2XLC. Certainly more dance oriented and less techno than the later Moskwa TV material but still very good.
Alisha - Baby Talk
posted a comment on Alisha - Baby Talk. over 7 years ago
There is no time gap between B1 & B2 -- it is basically one long track.

This is probably one of the early Freestyle songs I heard. Very good how it blends traditional synthpop with some freestyle elements. A great effort by Shep Pettibone.
Duran Duran - Planet Earth (Night Version)

An amazing song especially for its era. Pretty amazing this kind of synth pop came out in 1981. I remember watching the video of this song and it was really trippy with all its visuals.

The only downside with these early Night Version remixes is that... See full review

The sides on this release are reversed. The durations for A1 & A2 should be allocated to B1 & B2 and vice versa.

We Are The Boys is a great hinrg track. I remember it was popular when I used to play in the late '80s.
Erasure - Chorus
posted a comment on Erasure - Chorus. over 7 years ago
A weak effort from Erasure, however B2 (Snappy (The Spice Has Risen Mix)) is pretty good if you like a good house tune with Bell at the vocals. Nice catchy synth over a good percussion loop.
Michael Bow - Love & Devotion
posted a comment on Michael Bow - Love & Devotion. over 7 years ago
Synthpop from Fonny De Wulf and at 135 bpm? No. This is not Synth-pop. This is Hi NRG / Italo-Disco.

This is a great song if you like Hi NRG. Its unusual to get Hi NRG from Belgium though since they are mainly famous for there Techno & especially New Beat. See full review
Madonna - Holiday / Over And Over
posted a comment on Madonna - Holiday / Over And Over. over 7 years ago
Very nice Dub versions on both sides, but the Over And Over (Dub) is really good. I think Thompson & Barbiero mainly did remixes for early '80s new wave artists (along with John Luongo) so this was something different.

I'm not a huge Madonna fan but... See full review

A decent track but the catch is that it does a pretty good sampling of Ryan Paris' 'Dolce Vita' (Ryan Paris - Dolce Vita) in the intro and an actual vocal sample in the bridge. They should have added the 'Dolce Vita' overlay on the outro as well. Of course the best... See full review

A classic for its era. I think this was also around the time Dominator, etc. were really popular too. Very raw techno beats with a pretty good rap version too.

A Split - Second - Rigor Mortis
posted a comment on A Split - Second - Rigor Mortis. over 7 years ago
Flesh is in my estimation the best New Beat track I can remember hearing. Amazing layered drum sequences and a great bassline. Burnout is pretty good too. Rigor Mortis is a decent EBM track but certainly not the best in that genre.
KTP* - Certain Things Are Likely

A very good remix of the original by Phil Harding which is unusual since he is really known for his HiNRG work. One of the few good synth-pop to house remixes I have heard. Most house remixes of synthpop artistes sound stale but this one works really good. See full review

The Rave Alert mixes are mediocre but Kick Back For The Rave Alarm is very good. The AA side tracks are pretty good especially if you like the pseudo-hardcore sound they create. AA3 is just another remix of Injected With A Poison.
Kristian Conde - Dolce Vita

I remember hearing Dolce Vita on the radio on a mix show (KITS, DJ Steve Masters) and I bought this record but it wasn't the right version -- what I heard on the radio was actually the Ryan Paris 1983 song. But this song is definitely very mellow and... See full review

The durations are clearly listed on the labels:
A Drive That Fast 5:36
B Railwayed 3:56

Railwayed is actually 4:57 even though it is stated as 3:56.
Data (2) - Living Inside Me

Good early record from Data. The Living Inside Me version here is different than the Joseph Watt mix which I think is superior (Various - Razormaid Chapter A.2). It definitely has a different bassline.

I didn't know Pete Burns passed, so sad. Youthquake was the first LP I bought as a teen and my introduction to hinrg/synthpop. Seems like only Youthquake & Mad Bad were synthpop after that they went back to their hinrg roots.

One of the best chords on a house track I've heard. That chord in the intro in the Club Mix is amazing. This & R-Theme (R-Tyme - Illusion / R-Theme) probably have the best chords -- at least before the Progressive Trance artists used it as their backdrop for creating tracks. See full review
Pet Shop Boys - West End - Sunglasses

Without a doubt the worst PSB record I have. I remember playing this at a party where people generally loved synth-pop & hinrg and they really hated this record. Personally it isn't too bad but you have to be a real fan of PSB to like it.
Another Bad Creation - Playground

This was probably there best single. Definitely a better beat than Iesha. Ironically the B2 mix is probably the best. The Acapella mix has less drum programming than the A side mix and just sounds cleaner.

The Icon mix is a decent updating of Shelley's song with house beats on it. The Techno mix is just the instrumental of the bassline of the Icon mix with a more techno feel to it.
Black Sheep - Flavor Of The Month

These guys were good and the A side is really nice with their jazzy samples. Dres is a really good rapper with his rhymes. I'm surprised they never really made it bigger. Check out their other good song BlackSheep* - The Choice Is Yours.
Cetu Javu - Por Qué?

B2 is just the English "version" of A (Por Que?) although it loses a lot in translation. The back of the cover states B2 as being 3:54 which is obviously incorrect.
Tekno Master* - Kuruption

The Youth remix almost makes this a techno track. Its really a pop techno track with a lot of samples. I used to mix it with Digital Boy (Digital Boy - Gimme A Fat Beat (Remix)) and it worked.

This song and the Xenophobia track (Xenophobia - Rushing The House / The Wobbler) are probably the best early hardcore tracks. I remember playing these and the crowd loved them. The A side remix is incredibly raw.
Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force - Looking For The Perfect Beat

On my copy there are 2 tracks on the B side. B1 is the instrumental and I believe B2 is the same as A2 -- just another Bonus Beats.
Jakie Quartz - À La Vie À L'Amour

Chanson with synth-pop dance beats. Great songs by Jakie Quartz. I especially love the Bye Bye L'Ennui song.

I was always surprised she never made it in the US since Desireless was pretty successful. She is a far better vocalist.
Holy Noise Presents The Global Insert Project - The Nightmare

This is the strangest 12" pressing I've ever seen. My copy has 2 separate runouts on each side so it is effectively 4 separate records. I don't understand what purpose this serves.
