Official Release #2
The gatefold sleeves of "Absolutely Free" vinyl, with the spine to the left, have the front image/title rotated right. When oriented to view correctly - and you turn over - the back is also viewed correctly. On the back, the original art signature of Zappa ("FVZ 12/66") has been removed from the bottom-right corner. Censorship was applied to some issues; On the back cover, above the "Buy America" American flag illustration, the words "War Means Work For All" was either 'ghosted' or removed from Zappa's art. Nor does it appear in later CD images, or on the 2012 reissue.
'Absolutely Free' was recorded at T.T.G. in L.A., during the week before Thanksgiving, Nov 1966. Zappa's comments, within the Libretto, indicate the release of this work was delayed until May 1967 due to the label wishing to apply censorship to the words. Originally intended for inclusion, the Libretto was independently-funded and produced by Zappa as a US mail-order item - including its reproduction in UK's September '67 issue of International Times. Some vinyl is also 'un-banded' [no visible track separation].
On the inner spread Gail Zappa is credited as "My Pumpkin", also relating to the track "Invocation & Ritual Dance Of The Young Pumpkin".

- Anybody know if the original liner says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…” on the flip it says “We make records a little different…”?
Just curious. - So we know that most of the multi tracks I think for all Frank's 1960's have been found during the 1980's was another story... But THIS recording there's a mono mix and this one mix that's been released from the original tape .... I never heard any remixes of this album .... Joe Travers calling ?
- In the Zappacast podcast episode "The Grandest Wazoo (& Waka Jawaka, too!)", host Scott Parker was reading a question from a fan directed towards Joe Travers. The fan's question mentioned Peter Jackson's innovative usage of track separation for his TV series "The Beatles: Get Back", and concludes with asking Joe if there are early tapes in Zappa's vault that are currently unusable that could be rescued using the same technology. In his response, Joe mentions a specific example regarding "America Drinks And Goes Home" from Absolutely Free:
Joe Travers: Well, I'm sure it could. One of the things that I think about right off the top of my head when we talk about that is the fact that on the "Absolutely Free" 4-track tapes, the master tapes, on the song "America Drinks And Goes Home" all of the cash register and the people that you hear in the mix, it's not on the 4-track. So that means they "flew it in" when they mixed it back in 1966. So, where did they get that from? I have not found the source tape of those cash registers and the people screaming and carrying on. So it would be nice to get that isolated so that if we were to ever do a remix someday that we would have control over that. But right now, we don't have it at all. We don't have the source at all. So that would be kinda cool to see if we could extract that, right? - The printing that should have been on the spine is offset so that it appears on the edge of the front cover.
- I haven't checked out any of the other pressings, but everything included here really makes it an amazing experiencing, flipping through the pamphlet included gives the album a ton more personality and flow than a simple Spotify listen. Pressing sounds amazing (Invocation and Ritual Dance gave me chills despite it being the millionth time ive heard it), remastered all analog too. All the packaging is perfect and the Zappa etching on the blank D-side is sick! Buy it! It's HIP, HEP, SWINGIN' and ZORCH.
- Edited one year agoHow is this from the original tape when Frank himself said the drums and bass for the first 3 Mothers records had to be remixed (not just remixed, reproduced by other musicians) for the Old Masters box sets because of tape degradation? Is this really from the original tapes, or from the remixed tapes from the mid eighties? Anyone know?

I found this under the zappa records at a record store for 28 dollars in September. Sounds AMAZING. I would recommend buying, only if you can get it at a reasonable price.- Sounds Fantastic, libretto in my copy is fine with all page in right order. Clear label on etched side.
