referencing Red Apple Falls (LP, Album) DC116
Hi,
On my copy on this 1997 pressing, there seems to be a stauration issue. It is flagrant on Blood Red bird, but also on To be of Use. As the voice rises in the high tones, the higher peaks are saturated. I tried on two systems: Technics SL1300 / Shure V15 type V on the one hand, and Thorens TD190 / Pro-ject K4 on the other, brand new needles, both with JBL 4311B. No difference. Does anyone else have the same issue?

I got into Bill Callahan's body of work in reverse chronological order (basically) when I started listening to him (around the time Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle came out), and I'm still not familiar with all of the corners of Smog's discography. I grabbed the LP version of Red Apple Falls when it came back into print at Drag City without knowing much about it, and I wasn't disappointed! This record's got a lot of quiet sections, for sure, but Bill's voice stands out nicely in the mix (I was under the impression that it gets drowned in a lot of his earlier releases, but thankfully that isn't the case). He hadn't developed his voice to the point where it got to in late Smog / where it is now, but you can hear flashes of it. Highly recommended!
As I mentioned above, I have the LP version. It arrived slightly warped, but played perfectly with minimal surface noise. Quiet parts were dead quiet, and the loud parts had nice differentiated sound (guitars, drums, synths [I assume?], everything else.
