- Awesome awesome awesome! IMO the best and the most definitive of Dieselboy's mixes. Almost every single track on it is a smasher, from an anthem like "Can't Punish Me" to dancefloor destroying "Brainhack", "Descent", "Selecta", "Sentient". Heavy techstep vibe. Love this mix hugely!
- It was because of this cd, and particularly the Dillinja Remix of Hive's 'Ultrasonic Sound' that I got into DnB. I found it on Napster (I know, I'm old) when looking for bass heavy tracks (Crystal Method, Prodigy, etc.). In the states, Drum & Bass wasn't marketed at all, so it was almost impossible to find it in a record store by accident.
Dieselboy is, IMHO, the best DJ, I know that blasphemous for the UK headz. I think this is due to fact that Dieselboy is one of the few big name artists in DnB that chose to focus on his DJing, whereas most artists are producers first and use DJing as a marketing tool for their brand.
He also doesn't get near enough recognition for the fact that he was the first DnB DJ that treated his mix cds the way a film director treats a movie. He created a story with the tracks and each mix has a different theme, whereas most mix cds are just a collection of songs.
Any fan of heavy, techy DnB should definitely check em out. - IMO, one of the best drum & bass mix CDs of all time. To me, this CD has stood the test of time -- still sounds pretty recent to this day. Hard to listen to this without getting amped. As commented above, it's not the most hardcore collection of tracks ever seen, but they are not of the soft variety either; to say so might be an understatement. Mixed quite flawlessly too!
In the world of mix-CDs, it's often easy to lose a grip on the "overall picture" -- or the journey -- that the DJ was trying to evince. System Upgrade starts off with a cold, mechanical into, followed by a very suiting, rigid "Mindscan" by Ram Trilogy. The energy is manifested throughout, and IMO proves to be pretty dynamic. I feel that this is album-like in that regard. Well put together. 5 from me. - Edited 18 years agoA decent mix CD by Damian Higgans. This was right around the time I started getting interested in DnB again and this CD helped. I ended up buying 8 of the records used in this mix for my collection. This mix isn't exactly hardcore but its a nice snapshot of the DnB scene when it was moving away from the techstep sound and back into the breakbeats. Nice one from the one like the Deiselbutt!
