Reviews
- Edited 19 years agoFollowing on the incredible crossover success of jazz/R&B crossover artist Jeff Lorber's "The Facts Of Love," which featured Karyn on vocals, Karyn's self-titled debut was probably one of the most solidly crafted debut albums of its day. Listening to it twenty years later the album sounds a bit dated having been produced right before the pinnacle of the popularity of the "LaFace sound," but that doesn't detract from the tight production from Reid and Face and from Jeff Lorber, whose presence provides a well planned and well performed 'transition' from the R&B/fusion crossover sound that Karyn got noticed for straight into mainstream R&B and subsequently into the top 40. That, coupled with White's flawless vocals throughout on classics like "Superwoman" and "Secret Rendezvous" catapulted Karyn to stardom and, despite the aforementioned formulaic sound of a few of the tracks on here, managed to make "Karyn White" a perfect snapshot of the late 80's R&B/top 40 crossover sound... a time capsule piece with a beautiful cover to boot.
