- This is a beautifu album. Tropical country samba - you know, the usual genre Nes just plows ahead and invents for himself. I agree that it's a shame that his name will be forever weighted down by the Monkees and not his innovative solo career. But as time passes, and the Monkees get the serious respect they always deserved as one of the most talented acts of the 60s. (to detractors I say have you ever heard Micky Dolenz sing, or watched the jaw-dropping 'Head' film), I think the reputation of Mike's work will grow accordingly. I think Papa Nes was near equivalent to Gram Parsons as a country singer, and far surpasses him in innovation. Back to Tropical Campfires - I just love it. It's warm and relaxing and good humored. If I come home in a bad mood and put it on, I'm suddenly greeted by a friend I'm always happy to see. As for genre, like I said, Nes is too ornery to be troubled by such a concept.
- Michael Nesmith probably will never get his proper serious due because if his tenure as a Monkee, but he's truly an American treasure. This is one of his best albums. It's worth owning for his version of Cole Porter's "In the Still of the Night", easily my favorite version of that gorgeous song.
