- Edited one year agoThis is a criminally underrated album in my opinion. Superb! I'm in the middle of reading The Light Pours Out Of Me, a biography of original guitarist John McGeoch. According to the book, McGeoch was a little put out by his perceived step backward in the construction of the album. I listened to the album again today and I really think his concerns were unwarranted. While it's true that Dave Formula has taken on a bigger role on this album, there is still a lot of stellar guitar work from McGeoch. It actually feels like a more balanced approach on this album with everyone contributing in significant ways. McGeoch even wrote The Thin Air, a non-guitar song, and according to DeVoto, what he brought to the band with this song was pretty much verbatim what ended up on the LP. Definitely different from Real Life but in a good way. I don't think it was a coincidence that McGeoch's guitar took a much more prominent role on the third album.
- One of the most underrated bands from that period! this record is absolutely one of the best albums ever made.
- Without doubt one of the finest records ever made, a masterpiece. Slated by the music press when released which probably contributed to the lack of commercial success. Throughout history the music press have hyped the unwarranted and either ignored or slagged those that deserved better.
- My vinyl copy matches the 2nd German version but also has a single sided black and white insert with the lyrics on. I don't see this mentioned anywhere else. Do other versions have this as well?
- Notice the skip in Cut-Out Shapes, the second "I just get numb..." part.
Does anyone NOT have this skip?
