The roots of the company were established by the brothers Charles & Emile Pathé in September 1896 as Compagnie Générale Des Cinématographes, Phonographes et Pellicules with the head office at boulevard des Italiens and a factory constructed at Chatou (as of 1936 known as Pathé Marconi, Chatou). Subsequently the name of the company was changed to Compagnie Générale Des Phonographes, Cinematographes et Appareils de Précision, then to Compagnie Générale des Etablissements Pathé Frères, Phonographes et Cinematographes.

In 1899 Compagnie Francaise De Gramophone (Cie Française Du Gramophone) was established by the The Gramophone Co. Ltd. in France with its head office in Boulevard Haussmann in Paris with a factory first in Ivry and then at Nogent-Sur-Marne.

On 17 February 1919, the brothers Pathé established a new company Compagnie Générale des Machines Parlantes Pathé Frères which took over all of their phonographic activities including the factory at Chatou.

In 1928 Columbia Graphophone Company Ltd. acquired Compagnie Générale des Machines Parlantes Pathé Frères, the following year Compagnie Générale des Machines Parlantes Pathé Frères acquired the Marconiphone Company established by physicist Guglielmo Marconi who had subsequently acquired the Pathé label and companies in 1924 (outside the US)

The Columbia Graphophone Company Ltd. and The Gramophone Co. Ltd. are merged in 1931 to form the conglomerate Electric & Musical Industries Ltd. (EMI), whom in 1936 effects a merge of Compagnie Française De Gramophone and Compagnie Générale des Etablissements Pathé Frères to form Les Industries Musicales Et Electriques Pathé Marconi. S.A.

As of 1964 Les Industries Musicales Et Electriques Pathé Marconi. S.A. was also operating 5 principal subsidiaries, 3 wholly owned publishing companies Eco Music, Les Editions et Productions Musicales Pathé Marconi (Éditions Pathé Marconi), Société Des Editions Chancelier., and 2 record clubs Club De Disque P.M. (established in 1960) and Club Société De Diffusion Musicale Et Artistique.

In Jan 1971 ultimate parent Electric & Musical Industries Ltd. (EMI) is renamed EMI Ltd. (EMI), whom in 1972/73 renames Les Industries Musicales Et Electriques Pathé Marconi. S.A. to Pathé Marconi EMI S.A.

Edith Piaf, Tino Rossi, Luis Mariano, Charles Trenet and, after World War II, Gilbert Bécaud, were some of popular artists to record for the company.
