- Edited 1 years agoGreat pressing, this is actually the same as the one for the International Artists Box Set from 1979 IABOX1, so if you have one of these with "Ach" in the deadwax then you have one of these 1000 :-). They just sold them separately out of the Box I guess. Thin vinyl but soundwise perfect, Cover near identical with the original pressing, these have often defects. This is a really underrated Album and a really strange weird one in a very good way. Just listen to "Dairymaid S Lament", "Save the house" or "The Jeweils of the Madonna" and then just again figure out the year of the release and tell me the genre!?
- Edited 2 years ago30 Years ahead of its time. Dairymaid''s Lament sounds like it could have come out of a Drag City band last year. One song sound like the Pixies, and another sort of Syd Barrett's American cousin but this doesn't do it justice. So creative and ahead of everyone. Singular. Victory Garden is a tiny bit like Galaxy 500. Other songs have affinity to the Velvet Underground's VU. Other songs like Jim O'Rourke. So out there yet so catchy. You really can't compare it to any bands around then. It would take the indie world 30 years to catch up. All those off kilter rhythms and melodies. What was Mayo Thompson listening to? Nothing around then. Only his muse.
- “Save the House” is a genuinely exciting tune and sounds like ten years ahead of its time. Unfortunately the rest is borderline unlistenable and sound like undeveloped ideas and throw away demos, and I consider extremely open minded and usually enjoy difficult outsider music ala Albert Ayler Trio Spiritual Unity or Beefheart’s “Trout Mask Replica” etc. etc. but this one just misses the mark for me. There’s definitely some other cool moments like the vibe and chords of “Ravi Shankar” but as a whole it’s far too inconsistent a record. Maybe I spoke too soon. “Dairymaid’s lament” is a ripper and dare I say coherent breath of fresh air. It’s so well played it makes me wonder why some of the other tunes are such stinkers in comparison. It’s truly a bizarre affair of tremendous musical highs and lows. I don’t what to think anymore. It definitely gets better as the songs progress through the record and there are some sections of clarity and creative brilliance that are beyond explanation because the style is so out of step with the era you almost think they have a time machine and are predicting all the future genres punk, indie, post punk. Weird. I still can’t say I love this but I appreciate it and have a better understanding by the end and with repeated listens.
- I know cover and label says STEREO but my copy sounds like MONO, just a little higher dB on right channel (by ear only, no formal analysis done). Makes sense for a DJ/Radio copy...
Does anyone know why it was not issued in mono, 1968 almost all records still were?
