Notes

Initial pressings were by CBS/Sony (see below notes) and are indicated in the hub by "MANUFACTURED BY CBS / SONY RECORDS INC". For Toshiba-EMI pressings (est. 1984 to Jul 1985) see here: The Beatles = The Beatles - Abbey Road = アビイ・ロード

- Mastered with pre-emphasis

- Some of the very first releases were issued without an obi. Instead, they came with a round gold price sticker with Japanese text on it adhered to the outside of the shrink wrap.

- "The Japanese Abbey Road CD has the distinction of being the very first Beatles CD in the world released by an officially sanctioned (i.e., non-bootleg) entity." - ref: Reference Library: Abbey Road Japanese CD

NOTE: The first Japanese pressings of Abbey Road on CD were released in Japan by Toshiba-EMI Records, under their label EMI/Odeon, with a catalog number of CP35-3016. Seeing as Toshiba-EMI Records did not have a pressing plant in operation yet (it would be a couple of years before they would open their first CD manufacturing plant), these compact discs were pressed for them by CBS/Sony Records Inc. of Japan. Nonetheless, the labels of the CDs have “Mfd. By Toshiba-EMI Ltd. In Japan” on them, as they were Toshiba-EMI Records releases. The very first pressings of the CD were released in Japan in May of 1983.

Full disclosure: I don't actually own a copy of this pressing, but I have heard it.

Having said that, I imagine this is probably as close to the original tape we'll ever get. All the old rumors are true, this truly does sound incredible, it's an untouched transfer. It especially blows the 2019 Remix out of the water in terms of fidelity, and the later releases of the original mix as well. One thing I'm not sure of is the lineage. Some people say it was made from a Japanese copy of the Master Tape, others say it was straight from the original tape. I suppose it doesn't matter that much, though.

Hey you, do you like Abbey Road? Thinking of pulling the trigger on one of these "grail" Black Triangles? Stop right there! Did you know that the 1987 CDs were mastered with the wrong polarity, which is most likely the cause of the "dull/uninvolving" accusations levelled at it? This was first brought up on Steve Hoffman Forums a few years ago, and comparison to a personal rip of a UK -2/-1 LP confirmed it. Once ripped and inverted in Audacity, the tracks have a whole lot more punch/sparkle, and just generally sound 'right'. Give it a try!

Not that this will add anything new or relevant, but in a thrift store today, I happened to come across a copy of this CD. I thought it was odd that it would end up on the thrift store shelf...but in examining it, I found out why it was there. There was no booklet, and the CD itself was in disastrous condition. Sure, it was only $2, but I just didn't bother.
