- Edited one year agoEmbarrassingly, my entree to Chet Baker was in '89, hearing this soundtrack to a movie I would not see for another decade. A student of jazz then, I concentrated on the east coast and Kansas City purveyors and somehow skipped west coast cool jazz. What a thrill to eventually hear "Chet Baker Sings", "Chet", and other early recordings; like going back in time. Nevertheless, I've always felt this record embodied a truly gifted musical soul, sadly near the end of his career.
The track list is outstanding; a few of his original standards, plus a few contemporary ones. His vocals lumber forth, seemingly in a drowsy stupor, but his trumpet playing is lyrical and focused, steeped in experience and nuance.
The recording is outstanding. Chet pops right out into the room and the bassist is lyrical with a unique wavering mid-rangey tone. Good pressing and excellent sleeve graphics.
4.5 stars. Recommended. - Flawless recording and worth every penny! Chet's trumpet was perfectly recorded. Feels like he is singing, playing, and nearly nodding out in your living room. What a beautiful tragedy Chet was...
