- Edited 4 months agoEdit to later. Needed a clean as it turns out. Put it on a 2nd time for it to kick in properly.
Actual Slam now on the drums. Fantastic soundstage. - This is another great Kevin Gray release. This sounds better than I have heard before, with some great depth and punch on those drums. The original CD release of this was a summer soundtrack when I was a much younger man, so these songs are burnt in to my DNA.
I can't image a better sounding release of this on vinyl being available.
Put through a full wash cycle then a full autocycle (wash and dry) on my HuminGuru before being played on a Pro-ject DC Evo with Ortofon 2M Blue, through the MM phono stage of the Cambridge Audio Evo 150, to my ears though a pair of Klipsch Heresy IV. - need to listen to this one again but happy i got it and wow if ever some cover art is made for vinyl this applies for sure.
- The cover with the comic drawing has hidden so many details and funny jokes. The vinyl is flat but I had to wash it twice. There was a lot of paper dust from the paper inner sleeve. When you clean it it sounds great. One of my favorite albums to listen to. The songs are fun from start to finish. I also have the album on CD. I like the Vinyl version better.
- Great, full, dynamic sound. Quiet and flat pressing. Pick this one up if you come across it. Still not (too) expensive.
- Edited one year agoHad the chance to listen this reissue because a friend was so kind to lend me his copy. What can i say but WOW? My original german pressing (sourced from DAT) does not sound as good as this one: yes: Kevin Paul Gray did a terrific job! It's powerful yet dynamic, and it also seems to be also slightly pitched up, a thing that i personally like very much.
I can't disagree more with the negative comments i'm reading about. - Sounds good to me. I own an original CD release I got for my birthday as a kid in 1995. I don’t know why anyone would complain about this vinyl reissue. Sounds great to me compared to the CD. Sometimes I truly wonder what people expect….it’s alternative punk rock. It sounds perfectly fine. Are you expecting some kind of 3D experience? I don’t get it . It’s Green Day people. Lol
- Personally I find that this pressing of Dookie is quite quiet and compressed. For some of the songs this works well, but for other songs like Burnout and F.O.D. this becomes more of a problem. But I will admit that this sounds exactly the same as my cd copy of the album but was hoping that with a vinyl pressing of the album that the sound quality would be better than the cd copy.
The reason I feel it's a problem is because with Burnout it feels purposely put at the front as the song is meant to make a statement of what you are about to experience with punk energy mixed into a more pop writing style and begs for the dynamic range and loudness to catch the listeners attention.
And the problem for F.O.D. is that because of how quiet the pressing is I find the more quiet acoustic section of the songs are just hard to hear even on higher volumes unless you want to give yourself a headache when it gets to the louder sections of the song.
Other than the problems I personally find with the mixing or the compression of the album, I find that this is an alright pressing in terms of it being pop and click free with no warps. It came with a paper sleeve with no poly-lining which from pulling it out the first time did show it had scuffed the record at some point but luckily doesn't leave any defects in the sound or playability of the record. And also came with a lyric sheet that on the flip side shows images of the band around the time that they were recording this record back in 1994.
All in all this pressing is nothing special but is the most accessible way to be able to listen to this album on vinyl. I just wished there was more of a dynamic range that can be found on other Green Day records from around this time for example the 3x10" release of 21st century breakdown which that pressing is leagues above in dynamic range compared to this pressing.
