- Edited 5 months agoThis is my all-time favorite album. I've compared all of these vinyl releases with clean copies and I can definitely say the Mofi beats them all. An orig. UK is second, and US origs are a close 3rd. The UK shines over original US's with clearer vocals and really sharp mids. However, this Mofi does an unbelievable job of separating the instruments to let them all breathe and give them space. It really has to be heard to be fully appreciated. The mofi version of this album makes you LOVE to just listen to the music, whereas the orig UKs are better to let it spin and rock out to because the detailed instrument separation isn't as accessible to listen to.... plus only one flip!
With that said, I STRONGLY recommend this Mobile Fidelity pressing. It's truly amazing and such a treat to listen to. 10/10 - Edited 5 months agoWell just received today from Music Direct and it sounds absolutely stunning on my system (Mofi Studiodeck, Outlaw Audio RR2160MKll, 2 Pioneer CS99-A's 2 Dahli Zenzors, Outlaw Audio M8 Subwoofer, everything under Herbie's tenderfoot except Dahlis on the wall) Perfect pressing!! Amazing sound!
- This record does not meet the same standards as set by the other MoFi Dire Straits releases. It's too bright and cut too hot. Expect distortion on the hihats. The original 1980 US pressing is much better. I am aware that a lot of people use the 1980 UK pressing to compare this MoFi with, but this album was originally mixed and cut in the US so the US pressings should technically be better. I've heard the OG US, this MoFi, the MoFi SACD, the 1996 CD, the BG AAA cut from 2010 (same cut as 2014), and the Japanese SACD and the 1980 US is by far the best.
- I have this on the way, Also got the Mofi Stuidiodeck + last week (Amazing!!!) So really looking forward to giving this a spin!!!!
- The difference to the Bob Ludwig Remaster (https://www.discogs.com/release/5740637-Dire-Straits-Making-Movies) is huge - huge in favour of the MFSL version. With Bob Ludwig: annoyingly too loud guitars and compression, with MFSL: warm musicality, space and atmosphere. I didn't expect such a big difference.
- I have a New Zealand pressing of this which Is pretty smart! That said the clarity and separation around instruments gives it a definite edge. Perhaps not as dramatic as the difference between BIA MOFI vs OG. Still a terrific addition to collection. Clean flats quiet vinyl. Superior packaging, everything you would expect at high end audiophile level. Worth every penny!!!
- Edited 5 months agoThis is a solid remaster done right! The extra sence of space and scale the gain 2 ultra DSD process gives, works well for this album. It doesn't quite have the life, colour and shimmer like a UK OG pressing though. Really well done and the vinyl was dead quiet and the Gatefold sleeve was of a very high standard.
- Sorry but I have to disagree with most of the reviews here. Is it a good sounding record - yes, but for my money this is the weakest of the MOFI DS re-issues (apart from Brothers in Arms which I have not heard). If you haven’t heard an original UK pressing then I can understand anyone who thinks this sounds great & if you can’t get your hands on a UK original pressing then this is a very good alternative.
Now my preferred listening format is vinyl & I have a good set up so it’s nothing to do with equipment quality but for my money the UK pressing is better.
In my opinion though my best sounding version is the 1996 remaster CD done by the great Robert Ludwig. It’s the Super Bit Mapping CD and you can pick it up for around the 10th of the price of the MOFI. Yes some CDs do sound brilliant so play them & compare to the vinyl counterparts before you ditch them. The difference in the clarity on Knopfler’s guitar especially between the CD & MOFi is staggering.
If you are undecided which of the MOFI DS albums to go for, I feel Communique & Love Over Gold are the best sounding.
As far as ratings go I would rate this pressing 8/10, UK O.G. 9/10 & the remastered UK SBM CD 10/10. It’s only my opinion though & you may think differently & that’s OK.
