The Prodigy – Out Of Space

Out of Space is the best track Prodigy ever put out. Music for the Jilted Generation is cool, The Fat of the Land is great, but any track on those albums cannot stand against this track. The speed, the scratches, the samples, it's pure breakbeat mania. For those of you who dislike the track, I recommend you get your speakers checked, and if not, your ears.

"Out Of Space" updated Max Romeo's catchy reggae track "Chase The Devil" for the '90s hardcore breakbeat scene with some speeded-up samples of break-beats, '80s rap (Kool Keith on "Critical Beatdown") and turntablism (Jam Master Jay on "Peter Piper"), rave synths and bleepery, and the inspired use of a "boing" cartoon sound effect. The track builds superbly with the help of contrasting quiet-loud, slow-fast sections, a feature of '90s alternative music. Although the high-speed drums lack finesse, it remains a landmark in the evolution of electronic dance music, paving the way for genres characterised by eclectic sampling, such as big beat and bastard pop. ★★★★★

If you wanted to show somebody who doesn't listen to electronic music, what is rave music, a prime example of this would be The Prodigy - Out Of Space. Not only is it a beautiful piece of music, like pop music, there's an insanely catchy chorus that you can sing along to.

It's hard to believe this was made in 1992, at a time when 2Unlimited was the big Techno act dominating the pop charts. Out Of Space shows what was happening with UK Breakbeat Hardcore at the time, and that Liam Howlett was a master of this style. Using Synthesizers, a drum machine, a sequencer, keyboards and a sampler, it is quite amazing what he was able to conjure up. The track revolves around an excellent rave synth stab that's simple and remarkably effective, especially in the last breakdown. It never occurred to me that one of the vocal samples is Kool Keith from Ultramagnetic MC's, a great musician himself. The track really rests on the famous ragga breakdown and chorus, I actually thought it was an original vocal from Maxim. However, it's from Max Romeo & The Upsetters - Chase The Devil made by the legendary Lee Scratch Perry. Regardless, it sounds so wonderful here, you can't help but sing (or shout!) every word! One of the greatest songs I've ever heard in my life.

The accompanying video clip is kinda crazy, it contains the following: airplane footage, NASA simulations of the Voyager space probe orbiting around Saturn, ostriches (!), amazing dance moves by Leeroy and Keith, a gas masked raver completely off his pickle dancing like a man possessed in the middle of a farm, Maxim grabbing his balls and smiling at the camera while he does it, The Prodigy at some massive rave party and rare footage of Liam Howlett trying to dance!!

If that wasn't enough, let me draw your attention to Ruff In The Jungle Bizness (Uplifting Vibes Remix). A darker B-side track that is a firm favourite among the purists. More amazing keyboard work by Mr. Howlett, leading up to an emotional culmination of a Casio synth stab, an uplifting pad, a ridiculously simple piano line and a lovely female vocal: "FEEL THE JUNGLE VIBE BABY!" Simply awesome. Despite what the song title states, I feel like The Prodigy conquered the Jungle Bizness quite comprehensively.

Both the Techno Wonderland remix and the live version of Music Reach (1,2,3,4) is further proof that Liam Howlett is a musical genius. The latter was a glimpse into what a Prodigy live set was all about, if you were under age, this was the closest you could get to the Prodigy Experience. Speaking of which, even during the 2000's when promoting their newer material, they would always play Out Of Space, a testament to how good Out Of Space was and still is. Hearing an entire crowd sing Out Of Space is something to behold.

On Monday the 4th of March 2019, Keith Charles Flint from The Prodigy passed away, he was only 49. Rest In Peace.

Out of Space and Ruff In The Jungle Bizness are both really, really great tunes. They are both timeless and wonderfully done classics, all I got to say...

Who hasn't heard this if you were around the scene in '92 and '93?
Three people out of hundreds rated a 1, and four a 2?? Quit hatin', you don't amount to dirt with your hater ratings. Even a three is really low balling these tracks so these people don't know whats up either (in my opinion, but hey, its just taste I guess right). Maximum respect to Prodigy for these tunes mate.
