- Edited 25 days agoFlat record. Quiet, but not entirely silent: a few very light rotational ticks on Side 2 that were not removed by ultrasonic cleaning.
Not a great-sounding record, not a demonstration album you will use to show off your system, but sounds fine for a live recording from 1958. Piano sounds decent, but percussion at times sounds muffled and thumpy. Musically, it is easy to understand why this record is so well-remembered; the music is great and Jamal's playing is wonderful. Jamal has a few tricks he uses to make his musical points and you get to understand where he was stylistically at this point in his career...and you get to understand what all the fuss is about when it comes to this artist. - Compared to a clean original, this has a more balanced, neutral sound. The original is more dynamic, especially the percussion.
- Edited 2 years agoA cold stone classic. Quality music the whole way through, beautiful pressing, joyful, elegant and sharp as a tack
- I was a bit disappointed with the sound. Seems to show tape stretch if from the original. There are some wows and dropouts on the opening dut "But Not for Me". Going to pull out an old Argo copy from the 60's to compare, but the wows made me think it was pressed off center, but did not see much sway in my tonearm.
- Edited 4 years agoAlbum sounds nice, but too many questions for an AP release. Supposedly mastered at Sterling Sound but I can't find "cr" or "tr" on their engineer page. Also, not sure why they did a cheap single pocket with no lamination. Hope they're not falling back into old ways.
- I've just picked this up. This pressing is clear, silent, sublime. Gives the music incredible definition of air and range of space. Inside the instruments, while filling the room. Amazing.
