Reviews
- Something of a rarity in the somewhat carefully constructed manner in which Scott Walker's back catalogue is generally presented. This one includes 8 songs from the TV series album plus 13 from final two albums that are either derided or completely ignored altogether. There's the bonus of two songs from single only releases and what appears to be an otherwise unavailable version of one of the Walker Brothers' biggest hits.
What this means is that it's one of the few places to get hold of a decent chunk of what's seen as the half of "the wilderness years" on Phillips on CD. By limiting it to one disc, and necessitating a separation of the wheat from the chaff, the impression is that it's not exactly quite as terrible as one might have been lead to expect. Although the material clearly lacks the punch, invention, and quality of the classic 1-4 run, it's still Scott singing. Proof that even by-the-numbers-Scott straying towards MOR/country covers isn't without merit. Oh, and some of that TV show material is definitely worth the (generally reasonable) price of admission.
